The Harvard College Writing Program is the oldest in the United States. Since 1872, when the program was founded, a course in expository writing has been the one academic experience required of every Harvard student. We welcome you to "Expos," a Harvard tradition.

Announcements

New Award Will Honor Outstanding Undergraduate Travel Writing

The Harvard College Writing Program, the Office of Career Services (OCS), and the Office of International Programs (OIP) are pleased to announce the creation of the Harvard Undergraduate International Travel Writing Award for 2010.

First, second, and third cash prizes will be awarded to outstanding travel essays written by Harvard undergraduates based on their experiences while studying, volunteering, interning, or working abroad. Submissions can be personal essays or journalistic essays, and can range in length from 1,000 to 3,000 words.

Submissions will be judged by a committee of Harvard faculty and travel writers. Prize winners will be honored at a celebration event in November and will have their work published in Writing Program, OCS, and OIP publications.

Essays should be submitted to expos@fas.harvard.edu by Monday, October 4, 2010. Please check back on this webpage after June 15, 2010, for further submission guidelines before submitting entries.

New Harvard Writing Project Publications

The Harvard Writing Project is pleased to announce the publication of five new writing guides for students and instructors for the 2009-10 academic year.  The Guide to Writing a Senior Thesis in Sociology, the Student's Guide to Reading and Writing in Social Anthropology, and The Guide to Writing in Societies of the World 24 are available as PDF files in the resources for students section of the website.  The Methods Handbook for Social Studies Junior Tutorials and Teaching Writing for Psychology are available in the resources for teaching fellows section of the site.
